History

The word Ayl is a derivation in the German language from Eigel, in Latin from aquila and in French from aigle. The German translation of an old chronicle contains the meaning of eagle. Initially, the town had been a Roman fort, where a Roman soldier unit with a standard had been stationed. Then, it developed into Ayl. Roman graves with glass finds from about 300 years after Christus testify a former settlement.
With archbishop Eberhardt from Trier drawing up a contract with the count Walram from Arlon 1052, Ayl was called “Eile“ for the very first time.
The history of Ayl is the history of a wine village. The Romans have grown vine in the hillsides around Ayl already.1289 is declared as a very good vine year in the chronicle. When there was a vine auction in 1906, a cartload “1904er Ayler Kupp” was sold by auction for 15.030 gold mark- the, up to this date, highest at the Saar paid price.

The chronicle of the parish Ayl can be bought from the mayor for 20,50 Euro.
